The Complete Legal Writer

The Complete Legal Writer

“The Complete Legal Writer promises a lot and offers more. The text covers basic concepts such as legal logic and analysis, research methodology, the writing process, and citation proficiency. The overall sound is refreshing and will undoubtedly resonate with students. What distinguishes the text is not the wide variety of legal documents offered, but its potential to equip students with a method of evaluating all documents/genres that prepares them for writing and, ultimately, for more effective practice. The rhetorical approach to the legal genre is quite a discovery, and no legal library collection would be complete without this book. – Marie Summerlin Hamm, Law Library Journal The Complete Legal Writer lives up to its name, offering everything law professors and students need in a textbook, including citation skills, research skills, the writing process, a wide range of legal documents, and more. Using the innovative Discovery Approach genre (and its sibling, the citation literacy approach), this book teaches students to guide themselves through the process of writing unknown types of legal documents and prepares students to write independently in upper classes and in the workplace. The Complete Series for Legal Writers is a series of legal writing textbooks for students and practitioners, written and edited by UNC Law School professors Alexa Z. Chew and Katie Rose Guest Pryal. The series emphasizes a systematic and transferable approach to legal writing that includes the gender discovery approach, citation literacy, and feedback. Readers can easily apply these skills to a variety of unpredictable situations. Being complete does not mean listing all possible scenarios, but preparing the reader to encounter them.

Alexa Z. Chew is a clinical professor of law at the University of North Carolina School of Law, where she teaches practical courses in legal writing. She is an expert in legal citation (not to be confused with the Bluebook), and her citation fellowship includes “Citation Literacy”, “Stylish Legal Citation” and “Citation Stickiness” (with Kevin Bennardo). With Professor Katie Rose Guest Pryal, she is co-editor of the comprehensive series of legal textbooks, including The Complete Legal Writer (2. 2020 edition), The Complete Bar Writer (2020) and other titles to come. The book is also supported by an accompanying website: completelegalwriter.com For each legal genre covered in the book (e.g., memo, trial brief), The Complete Legal Writer provides (1) three solid samples, (2) gender analysis, and (3) specific questions to help students study the samples. Another innovation in the book are the chapters on giving and receiving feedback – essential legal writing skills that beginners often have to learn themselves. The second edition contains updates throughout; provide new chapters on review, editing and feedback; and an annex on the conduct of electronic search. She is an active member of the two major professional legal writing associations – the Legal Writing Institute (LWI) and the Association of Legal Writing Directors (ALWD) – and is a frequent lecturer on legal writing.

You can also find her and many other #legalwriting and #LRW experts on Twitter, where she mainly tweets about legal writing at @aznchew. The Complete Legal Writer, second edition, published in 2020 by Carolina Academic Press, with a robust teacher`s manual and brand new support in Core Knowledge for Lawyers. In addition, this book covers an essential skill for all legal writing courses: giving and receiving feedback. In addition to explaining how to give and receive peer feedback, an important skill given the emergence of peer feedback practices in the LRW classroom, The Complete Legal Writer also covers how to receive and implement feedback from professors and caregivers in the workplace to improve both a particular document and future documents. The Complete Legal Writer, a legal research and writing manual, takes an innovative approach: it uses gender discovery to teach students to guide themselves through the process of writing unknown types of legal documents. Readers learn to write independently and transfer their knowledge to high school and the workplace. The book also teaches research and citation skills as integral parts of the writing process. “This reader-centric text actually allows students to become complete legal writers. The authors gently but firmly guide students through “gender discovery”: a careful study of sample documents that students use to construct the conceptual frameworks that authors of such documents need. Students cultivate the soil, plant seeds of understanding, and harvest their own ideas, benefiting from “bottom-up” rather than “top-down” learning, which is refreshing and remarkably effective.

To help teach gender discovery, the authors provide three specific examples of each type of document covered in the book, a rhetorical analysis of each type of document, and specific questions to help students study the examples. The comprehensive legal writer covers the types of documents traditionally taught in the first year, such as memos and appeal briefs, as well as the types of documents taught in first-year graduate and non-traditional programs, including mock briefs, letters of request, and employer blog posts.
